For most families a trip to the movie theater is common place, but for some children with autism, sensory disorders, and other special needs, the theater setting is not an option. Rules at most theaters do not allow talking, getting up and moving around, or bringing in your own food. During sensory-friendly movies, lights are dimmed and the sound is turned down. This allows children to feel less stimulated and more comfortable in their environment while enjoying a trip to the theater with their family. During sensory-friendly movies, a child is allowed to get up, walk around, talk, dance, sing as long as it doesn't interfere with the safety of the other movie goers. Families with children on special diets are allowed to bring in their own snacks during sensory-friendly movies. The concession stand will also be open.

Youth Programs and the Exceptional Family Member Program are teaming up to offer the first ever sensory-friendly movie at Malmstrom. The movie, "Treasure Buddies," will be shown on April 10 at 10:30 a.m. This will be followed at 1 p.m. with a movie matinee for the general public.

This summer, movie matinees will be offered at the base theater on Wednesdays with the sensory-friendly movie starting at 10:30 a.m. followed by another matinee at 1 p.m. All movies are free. Movie dates are as follows:

June: 13, 20, 27
July: 11, 18, 25
Aug.: 1, 8, 15, 22
