In a first-ever event schedule April 28 starting at 9 a.m., the Malmstrom Fitness Center will be open to the Great Falls Community via a 10-team volleyball tournament. It is open to military and civilians with four slots reserved for civilian teams and six for the military. All slots have been filled.

"This is a great opportunity to open up Malmstrom to the community and to provide an opportunity for our Airmen to do recreational activities with their downtown community members," said Col. H.B. Brual, 341st Missile Wing commander.

Wing leadership approached Capt. Nick Saccone, an avid volleyballer both on base and off assigned to the 819th RED HORSE Squadron, and asked him to organize the event.

"I have been very involved with the volleyball populace, on and off base, so they offered me this opportunity to lead the first-ever volleyball tournament on our installation," Saccone said. "Overall, I hope this event meets the volleyball interests voiced by our military and civilian communities."

In addition to tournament action lasting until 5 p.m., the 341st Civil Engineer Squadron will be selling food and refreshments for players and spectators alike to enjoy.

Prizes have been set aside for the first place team, Saccone said. And more may be added if additional sponsorship is obtained.

To find out more about the tournament, call Saccone at 731-4720 or email him at nick.saccone@malmstrom.af.mil.
