Airman's Attic: Some do's and don't of donating Published May 18, 2012 By Valerie Mullett 341st Missile Wing Public Affairs MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- The Airman's Attic, located in building 4000 next to the Family Child Care Office, is open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to serve active-duty military and their family members in grades E-6 and below. Similar to a Thrift Store, the Airman's Attic relies on donations of household items to sustain their operation. Lately there has been an increase in the amount of unusable donations being left that causes an increase burden on the volunteers who donate their time to keep the doors open. "It is unfortunate that we have had to spend so much time sorting through and disposing of items that are left here and simply cannot be used," said Rhonda Hall, Airman's Attic volunteer. "We prefer for donors to come in when we are open to drop off their donations." The Airman's Attic accepts clothing, household items, electronics, books, stuffed animals and military items. Items that cannot be accepted include: Dirty, torn, badly stained or worn clothes, shoes, stuffed animals and linens Infant and child car seats, or baby cribs with drop down sides Broken, dirty or unsafe toys Broken or chipped housewares and knick knacks Unsanitary or rusty kitchen items Undergarments, unless they are new and still have their store tags Games or puzzles with missing pieces Books with ripped or worn pages/covers Flammables such as paint, gasoline cans, nail polish, etc. Expired food items Helmets Other items at the discretion of the Airman's Attic manager or volunteers on duty Additionally, items obtained at the Airman's Attic are not to be used in home day care environments or given to ineligible personnel. These items are not intended for friends or extended family members. If a patron or a volunteer is found to be misusing the Airman's Attic for unintended purposes, or found placing items received from the Airman's Attic into garage sales, auction sites, Thrift Shop consignments, or anywhere else for profit or non-profit, the patron or volunteer will be banned from using the Airman's Attic for one year. Questions or concerns should be directed to 731-2287.
