'Go for Green' program instituted at Malmstrom DFAC Published May 30, 2012 By Senior Airman Kristina Overton 341st Missile Wing Public Affairs MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- The Elkorn Dining Facility will be implementing a new Air Force Services-wide nutrition program by May 31 to assist Airmen in making healthier food choices. The "Go for Green" program will provide a simple color-coding system to make choosing heart healthy foods easier. "The program is designed to help Airmen make healthier food choices," said Lisa Schutz, 341st Force Support Squadron Elkhorn Dining Facility manager. "The dining facility is often the main place to eat for Airmen, especially those living in the dorms. By redoing the menus and adding more variety and better options, hopefully we'll be able to make a difference and help Airmen be more aware of what they are consuming." The "Go for Green" program is a nutritional recognition labeling system providing Airmen with a quick assessment of the nutritional value of menu offerings and food products in the dining facility. The menu items are labeled green (eat often), yellow (eat occasionally), and red (eat rarely) based on the impact the food can have on an Airman's performance. "It's really important to keep it simple when it comes to programs like this," said Jacqueline Maillet, 341st Medical Operations Squadron Health and Wellness Center nutritionist. "People tend to make fitness and good nutrition complicated and it really doesn't have to be. The labeling system of the program is based on the impact foods can have on the Airman's health and performance. By instituting a basic and recognizable concept, hopefully Airmen will begin to make healthier choices, if they so choose."
