MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- We have all witnessed the oil-caused rainbow sheen flowing across a parking lot during a rainstorm. Rainwater picks up pollutants like these and transports them to our rivers and streams through the storm sewer system. Any discharge to the storm sewer system that isn’t rain, snow melt or permitted exceptions is called an illicit discharge. Illicit discharges include vehicle fluids, garbage, pesticides, excess fertilizer and other household chemicals. A leak or spill should be promptly cleaned up.
Illicit discharges into the storm sewer system can pose a serious health threat to the natural habitat of streams and rivers, and affect quality of life. Illicit discharges can kill fish or make them unfit for human consumption. In Montana, we take pride in our mountain views and clean streams. It is imperative that only rainwater is sent to the river so our natural resources can be enjoyed by all who live and visit here. If you observe what you believe to be an illicit discharge or would like more information, call the 341st Civil Engineer Squadron at 731-6155 or 731-7148.
