Non-profit military support organization looking for favorite recipes Published April 15, 2011 By Valerie Mullett 341st Missile Wing Public Affairs MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- Much like the many military and retiree supporters of Malmstrom and Montana's servicemembers, a similar group of concerned citizens in Brooking, Ore., has banded together since 2006 to raise money to send care packages to military members who are deployed. That non-profit group, who calls themselves the Brookings-Harbor Redshirts, is currently undertaking a project to raise more funds and has asked the Malmstrom and Great Falls community for some help. "Our organization is working on a cookbook fundraiser," said Sharon Hitzman, Redshirt member. "It will be called 'While We Were Gone,' and will contain the recipes most missed by our military, sponsored by the Brookings-Harbor Redshirts." The call for help is for recipes, not for money. "We are collecting recipes from all present military, veterans, moms and wives," Ms. Hitzman said, "Anyone with a loved one in the military." In the book, the recipe will include the name of the service member, their rank and the person responsible for the recipe. Pictures can also be submitted, Ms. Hitzman said. The deadline to submit recipes is June 15. They can be emailed to redshirts_5@msn.com. The Brookings-Harbor Redshirts originally formed in 2006 as a group of friends who banded together to meet and wear their red shirts every Friday to show support for their sons and daughters in the military, according to their website at www.brookings-harbor-redshirts.org. The group soon began their care-package mission and as of March 18 of this year, they have sponsored more than 5,000 care packages to support deployed military members. "We are all Americans and live and enjoy our freedom and liberty because our military goes before us," said Frank Muller, Redshirt member. "We try to keep everything simple. We support our troops."
